Sustainable Innovations in Timber Architecture & Construction

We were honoured to host the “Sustainable Innovations in Timber Architecture & Construction” event at our Kampong Bugis space, co-organised with SIM–IQMG. The day brought together developers, architects, and designers to explore how timber can drive Singapore’s green future.

Aligned with the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the event focused on how regenerative timber solutions can shape a low-carbon built environment. Attendees experienced a curated journey through timber transparency, fire safety innovation, and hands-on design.

Exploring Timber Through Senses and Science
The session began with a sensory sandbox featuring a range of materials — from bamboo and pine to oak — allowing guests to see and feel the difference between species, textures, and grain. We discussed how timber stores carbon, the importance of responsible sourcing, and the role of certifications such as FSC® and PEFC™.

Designing for Durability and Longevity
Next, we explored installation methods that support long-term performance. Our team demonstrated how modular planking systems can simplify replacement, reduce waste, and lower maintenance costs, creating more resilient and cost-effective builds.

A Live Fire Demonstration
A highlight of the event was a live mini burn test, comparing untreated wood with our 2-hour fire-retardant coated timber, co-developed with NTU and certified to Bs1d0 Class B by TÜV SÜD. The demonstration showed how advanced coatings enhance fire resistance without compromising timber’s natural beauty, supporting safer, greener building standards.

Hands-On Crafting with Purpose
We ended the day with a creative hands-on workshop, where participants made their own timber coasters from upcycled offcuts of our Accoya Banyan Project — personalised with laser engraving as a meaningful memento.

A Regenerative Future for Timber
Many participants were inspired by the diversity of sustainable timber options available today — from mass timber and bamboo to engineered solutions. The event reaffirmed that timber doesn’t just sustain, it regenerates, storing carbon within structures and helping turn buildings into long-term climate solutions.

A big thank-you to SIM–IQMG, Nautilus Innovation, and all attendees who joined us in advancing purposeful, sustainable building design.
